Wonder, No Wonder...

2016

The installation Wonder, No Wonder is a response to Simon Stevins'  famous 'Clootcrans' thought-experiment. This experiment elegantly demonstrates the absurdity of  Perpetual Motion.

Alongside his designs for wind powered beach carts, calculations on the ideal angles for star shaped fortifications , mathematician Simon Stevin postulated the motto 'Wonder, No Wonder' midway the 16th century. A guide to live by, a way to see through the miracles of live, investigate and thoroughly explore the mechanics behind amazement. Moreover his motto can be read as an over-rational response to his era, leaving space for miracles nor for doubt.
